Franklin Mint be­gan as a pri­vately owned mint in Penn­syl­va­nia, which man­u­fac­tured col­lectibles for more than five decades. The com­pany started with items such as com­mem­o­ra­tive coins and medal­lions and then even­tu­ally be­gan mak­ing dolls.

Franklin Mint also pro­duced plates and jew­ellery fea­tur­ing the Princess, but after her death, The Princess of Wales Memo­rial Fund re­fused to grant the com­pany per­mis­sion to use her im­age. After a long le­gal bat­tle, in 2004 Franklin Mint ceased man­u­fac­tur­ing these dolls.

To­day, their celebrity dolls are still pop­u­lar and fea­ture icons such as Mar­i­lyn Mon­roe and El­iz­a­beth Tay­lor.
