Rising designer Sifiso Shange shares his favourites

South African Garden and Home - - Contents -

Ilove to tell stories through design,” says Sifiso Shange, who trained as an interior designer, and has his own range of conceptual sneakers. Now under the mentorship of Eugenie Drakes of the Design Foundation, he’s developed a range of furniture, Afri Modern, inspired by his Zulu culture.

During the day Sifiso is an interior designer, and at night he’s hard at work on Afri Modern, even giving each piece he designs a future launch date. “I’ve dated some pieces 2030 and beyond.”

Sifiso is a regular at Melrose Arch, Jo’burg, so that’s where you’ll usually find him, sketch pad and pen in hand. On the weekends, he balances his time between building his brand and spending time with friends, and indulging in his other passion, music.

1 THE MUHLE MUHLE SIDEBOARD This is my favourite design from my range.2 THE MUSIC OF DLADLA MSHUNQISI I’m passionate about the Durban Gqom genre, an intensified electric drum version of kwaito.3 DURBAN My local travel destination of choice. It’s where I’m from and where my story – and the story of Afri Modern – all began.4 KAT DEWAR JEWELLERY I love the concept of taking natural objects and turning them into something new.5 SHOE DOG BY PHIL KNIGHT (Simon & Schuster). I’m currently reading this memoir of the creator of NIKE. I’m a die-hard fan of the brand so the book is inspiring.6 MONTALE PARIS BLACK AOUD is a ‘banger’ of a scent, I wear it almost every day.7 HOLMES BROTHERS This clothing and retail brand from Durban is a beautiful reflection of the city and South Africa’s diverse urban culture.
