THE PROBLEM

“My grandmother’s room was very plain and old fashioned,” says Jo’burg graphic and interior designer Savva Pafitis. His ‘clients’, his mother and father, wanted something more glamorous for the room that Savva describes as “a granny bedroom in every sense of the word”.

THE SOLUTION

He presented them with three mood boards so necessary decisions could be made. “While neutral taupe and stone form the basis of this makeover, our love of Art Deco inf luences, hints of Oriental and Indian patterns, pops of rich jewel tones and must-keep heirlooms had to be incorporated into the design,” he says.

A teal feature wall works as a dramatic backdrop to a glamorous Art Deco-inspired headboard that Savva had custom made. “The headboard was quite a challenge as it kept arriving with multiple fabric joins in each corner. I intervened on the third attempt and devised guidelines on how to construct it so it looked as though it was made from one continuous piece of fabric,” Savva explains.

New pedestals with crystal knobs were introduced and tall glass bedside lights lend themselves to the theme and don’t block the framed photos and artwork.

Luxury was incorporated with soft furnishings such as the quilted bedspread and velvet and paisley-patterned scatters. “The cushions are double-sided so the mood can change from calm to daring if desired,” says Savva.

He then updated the occasional chair by reupholstering it in two different velvets and hung four decor-inspired artworks he created above it.

Sentimental photos and objects that hark back to a bygone era are displayed on a dark wood dresser, and a large mirror above it ref lects light and enhances the sense of space.

Now the room is a dramatic, sophisticated space that’s also calming. “My grandmother unfortunately never got to see the finished result, but I know she would have approved!” says Savva.
