WHEN TO GO Off-peak in May or Septem­ber when the weather is pleasant and there are fewer tourists.

GET­TING THERE The quick­est way is on the ferry from Tur­key, but you can get to this is­land on fer­ries from other Greek is­lands – al­though this makes it a much longer trip.

GET­TING AROUND Walk­ing is the best way to see the is­land. Hire a boat or ca­noe to ex­plore some of the other beaches.

VISAS South African pass­porthold­ers re­quire a Schen­gen visa. Ap­ply at Greek Con­sulates or Greek Visa Ap­pli­ca­tion Cen­tres.

CUR­RENCY The cur­rency is the euro. Al­though the ATMs are quite re­li­able, it’s best to ar­rive with suf­fi­cient cash for a few days. At the time of go­ing to print €1:ZAR16,15. A beer costs €3,50 (about R56,50), a light lunch about €5 (R81) and a seafood meal €15–€22 (R242–R355).
