Mom sad in court over date

-

A MOTHER bit her lower lip, desperately trying not to break down in court.

In the end, Mumsy Komane, mother of murdered Alice Komane, eventually gave in.

With her lips shaking violently, she broke down in the Delmas Magistrate’s Court two weeks ago.

Alice was raped, stabbed several times and left in a park where her body was discovered.

The source of Mumsy’s outpouring of emotion in court, though, was the coincidence of dates.

Alice was killed on February 18 in 2009. February 18 is also her birthday.

And come February 18, Lucky Sithembiso Shezi, described by Judge Ndawoyakhe Tshabalala as “a liar, a liar and a liar” will know exactly how long he will be in prison.

On hearing this Mumsy burst into tears and had to be comforted by a family member.

She asked prosecutor Charles Mnisi: “Why, Mnisi? Why sentence him (Shezi) on what would have been my daughter’s birthday and also the day she was killed. Why, Mnisi?”

Mnisi offered his apologies.

“I did not know, mama,” Mnisi said.

In addition to raping and killing Alice, Shezi was also convicted of the murder and rape of Liesel Fourie in 2010. – selebim@sowetan.co.za
