Mahoota an age cheat
IT WAS reported last week that music producer and artist Zynne “Mahoota” Sibika was ageing gracefully.
This was in light of his “50th” birthday celebrations at Taboo in Sandton, last Friday.
In a previous Sowetan article, he credited his “young looks” to a vigorous gym routine and drinking less alcohol.
Since then, several sources have disputed Sibika ’ s age.
“In reality, Sibika is the youngest member of the kwaito group Trompies. All the other members are above 45 years of age and he is in his early 40s. Maybe this was a publicity stunt for him to create the hype around his brand,” one source said.
Another source, who also did not want to be named, said Trompies band members always joke about their age, and suspected that maybe Sibika was celebrating his “fake ” group age with his fans.
Sibika disputed the claims when contacted and said that people must believe what they want.
During the interview, Sibika struggled to answer a simple question about his year of birth.
All he said was that this is a “personal question”.
“I am 50, and some of my friends, including Oscar ‘ Oskido’ Mdlongwa, can vouch for me.”
Mdlongwa laughed when he was asked his friend and business partner’s age.
“All I can say is that he is young at heart. The 50th birthday celebration is a concept he introduced three years ago and I will neither confirm nor deny his age,” Mdlongwa said.
Sibika asked us to call him after two minutes to explain “the full story”.
He later called back and said that he celebrated 50 to make it look cool. “Last year I celebrated 46 and I’m trying to make sure that older people don’t feel embarrassed revealing their age, ” Sibika explained.
Sowetan has seen documents which show Sibika ’ s identity number.
According to his ID number, he was born on March 16 1971, making him 42 years old.
Sibika is popularly known for being the other half of the DJ Vetkuk vs Mahoota music duo, and his latest hit single, Hade Mabebeza, has been dominating the airwaves since December. –
