WOMAN ARRESTED FOR FERRARI BOY ’ S DEATH
Said to be girlfriend of car owner s husband
A WOMAN has been arrested for the hit-and-run accident that killed a five-year-old boy in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, on Saturday.
Olerato Chiloane-Makena of Stinkwater near Hammanskraal was hit by a reportedly speeding black Jeep Compass outside his grandparents’ home in Block H when he posed for photos with a family friend’s Ferrari.
The car is owned by a Pretoria woman and the detained woman is alleged to be her husband’s girlfriend.
The car’s owner confirmed it was hers but told Sowetan she only knew that her hus- band had taken the vehicle.
“I have no information on what happened. I was in Centurion busy with a friend’s wedding plan,” she said.
She said her vehicle tracking service informed her the car was in Pretoria West and her brother went there and found it in the police pound.
Reliable sources said that Soshanguve police had told the family earlier in the day that they had arrested a man. The man apparently claimed he was driving the car at the time of the accident.
However, when the man found out the victim had died, he allegedly confessed to the police that he had been paid by the car owner’s husband to take responsibility.
Police then arrested the woman at about noon.
Gauteng police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale confirmed the arrest of a woman in connection with the hit and run.
She said the woman would be charged with culpable homicide and is expected to appear in the Soshanguve Magistrate ’ s Court today.
The Jeep Compass involved in the accident was found by residents later that same evening hidden in a yard in Block H.
Police said they should be called if anyone tried to remove the car.
Later that evening a couple driving a white MercedesBenz without registration plates allegedly came for the car but fled when the owner of the house phoned the police.
Olerato ’ s uncle Aaron Ngobeni said funeral arrangements had not been finalised yet, but the child would be buried on Saturday.
