More police in a bid to curb crime

- Frank Maponya Limpopo Bureau Chief frankm@sowetan.co.za

THE rising crime levels at Mankweng in Limpopo have led to the establishment of another police station.

This brings to two the number of police stations in the area, and to 97 the tally of police stations in the province. The fully-fledged station is situated at Sebayeng, and started operating on Monday.

Mankweng and surrounding areas have been experiencing an increase in criminal activities lately, topped by incidents involving the rapes of elderly people and young girls, murders, robberies and car hijackings.

“We had felt that it was inevitable that – with the growth of population – also comes an increase in criminal activities.

“Hence the decision to open a second police station in the area,” provincial police spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said yesterday.

Mulaudzi said the station would be responsible for serving communities of GaDikgale, GaMakgoba and Makotopong.

“These areas have also been plagued by incidents of housebreaking and theft, robberies and assault,” Mulaudzi said.

“In taking the fight to the criminals, the communities, in partnership with the police, have a duty to reclaim our streets. We require no permission from criminals to be able to walk tall in our streets without fear.” –
