Maimane lacks experience

- Thabile Mange,

SOUTH Africa will celebrate its second decade of democracy next year and will also hold its fifth national elections.

The DA has made its intention clear that it wants to win the richest province in the land – Gauteng. The DA has elected the young and inexperienced Mmusi Maimane as its premier candidate. Maimane beat Jack Bloom for the premier candidacy.

Bloom has been in politics for more than 20 years. He has spent the better part of our democracy in the Gauteng legislature.

This makes him one of the most experienced politicians in the legislature. Why did the official opposition choose Maimane over Bloom? Why did the opposition choose youth over experience?

Responding to one of the above questions, Maimane bragged and said he was more qualified than Bloom. He has two masters degrees. Was he implying that he was elected on the basis of his academic qualifications?

There is another school of thought that he was elected on the basis of his skin colour.

Maimane is a rising star and his future looks bright in politics.

Gauteng has complex chal- lenges, ranging from housing to health to unemployment.

It also has more community protests than any other province. According to Premier Nomvula Mokonyane this is because it is a victim of its own success. So the province needs an experienced premier, something Maimane is not.

In the last local elections, Joburg residents, who form part of Gauteng, didn ’ t entrust him with the responsibility of running the City of Johannesburg as mayor.

So why should Gauteng residents entrust him with the responsibility of running their province in the next elections? Maimane lacks experience.
