THE founding father of Mozambique ’ s freedom struggle Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane was honoured in Limpopo at the weekend.

On Saturday, Frelimo ’ s leaders gathered at Homu near Giyani to unveil a monument in honour of Mondlane.

Mondlane, who was killed by a parcel bomb on February 5 1969, studied at Lemana High School near Elim in Makhado (formerly Louis Trichardt).

He then left for his motherland where he later helped find Mozam- bique ’ s ruling party.

He studied at Wits University but was forced to drop out due to apartheid policies.

Mondlane was killed by a parcel bomb while in exile in Tanzania, where he was launching the guerrilla war against Portugal, Mozambique ’ s former coloniser. He was buried in Dar es Salaam.

Frelimo ’ s first secretary in South Africa, Jonas Sitole, conveyed the Mozambican government ’ s message of gratitude to traditional leaders in the area for giving refuge to his compatriots.

A member of the Mopani ANC regional working committee, Sonia Ngobeni, praised Frelimo for the way it contributed “to the liberation of South Africa ”.

Well-known traditional leader Hosi Shilungwa Mhinga II said he allowed people from Mozambique to stay in his area because he feels they are his people.
