Nedbank Cup draw set for Thursday

- Nick Said

THE draw for the second round of the Nedbank Cup will take place in Johannesburg on Thursday, the day after the final three round-of-32 matches.

The event will be staged at midday when the likes of holders Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will learn their fate.

Although a number of topflight sides were run close in their weekend first-round matches, most have made it through to a strong Last-16 field that also includes Bidvest Wits, SuperSport United and MTN8 and Telkom Knockout holders Platinum Stars.

As there are no seedings in the Nedbank Cup, there is the potential for some classic showdowns, potentially even a Soweto derby, in this stage of the competition.

The last time Chiefs and Pirates met in the Ke Yona tournament was back in 2006 when Amakhosi triumphed on penalties in the final after a 0-0 draw.

Only Free State Stars have so far failed to advance against lower league opposition – having been beaten 1-0 by NFD side Witbank Spurs.

Bloemfontein Celtic are the only remaining top-flight side still to play their first-round game as they travel to the Coetzenburg Stadium to meet fourth-tier University of Stellenbosch tomorrow night.

Other matches taking place tomorrow night see Santos take on KwaZulu-Natal thirdtier side Gamalakhe United, while Eastern Cape Safa Second Division team FC Buffalo host FC Cape Town.
