Hear Me Move ’ is one of a kind

A NEW local movie, Hear Me Move, premiered on Wednesday night to resounding applause at Johannesbu­rg ’ s Newtown Junction mall.

The dance film has been touted as South Africa ’ s movie.

is about a young accountant student, Muzi, played by Nyaniso Dzedze, who follows his passion for dance despite his mother ’ s disapprova­l. Muzi is the son of a great pantsula dancer who died tragically in his prime.

The movie has the makings of American dance films like

and but is told from the South African perspectiv­e of urban youth culture in the townships and the city.

The film ’ s writer, Fidel Namisi, said: “This is a different kind of black film. It was a gamble doing something this different because people don ’ t often support these kind of movies. It ’ s a deeply moving experience that should only be experience­d on the big screen.”

The film has been shown at internatio­nal festivals such as Toronto in Canada, Cannes in France as well as in the UK.

Producer Wandile Molebatsi enthused: “I hope people will have confidence and see that South Africans have ‘ African cool ’, that ’ s cooler than Paris, Prague and everywhere else where we ’ ve shown the film.”

From Power FM ’ s Pabi Moloi, comedian Tumi Morake and her husband Mpho Osei-Tutu, former

actor Zolisa Xaluva to veteran actress Lillian Dube and Thembi Seete, who are both part of the movie ’ s cast, who came out to play.

Dube plays the grandmothe­r of the main character. “Being a grandmothe­r myself, I loved playing Muzi ’ s grandmothe­r. I enjoyed working with the director. I love that it ’ s a first of its kind. Very beautiful, ” she shared.

“It ’ s so great to see South Africans supporting movies that are by them, for them and about them,” said Scottnes Smith, the director of the film.

Although the movie just opened at local theatres, Smith is headed for Australia to open a new branch for Coal Stove Pictures, the company that produced

Absentees at the premiere were Sthandiwe Kgoroge, who plays Muzi ’ s mother, as well as Khanyi Mbau and Boity Thulo, who both have cameo appearance­s in the film and feature on the posters promoting it.
