Witness tells how he escaped kidnap, death

- Sandile Motha

DETAILS of a murder at an Umlazi school have emerged in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court.

Two men face murder, attempted murder and kidnapping charges after they allegedly kidnapped two men from Umlazi ’ s C-Section at gunpoint. Bhapo Ngubane, 35, and Delani Njongo, 32, then allegedly drove to Menzi High School and shot their victims, leaving them for dead.

Nhlanhla Ntshangase survived the ordeal but Zenzele Sibiya died.

Yesterday, Msizi Koyana, who escaped the kidnap attempt, took to the witness stand and told the court how the quarrel ensued after a road rage incident involving his uncle Bheki Mkhize on March 3 last year.

“We were seated near a spaza shop close to my uncle ’ s house. He was reversing out of the driveway to the main road when a white Citi Golf stopped behind him. Njongo came out of the car and accused my uncle of blocking the road,” Koyana told the court yesterday.

He said the quarrel became heated, prompting Ntshangase and Sibiya to intervene and mediate. He told the court Njongo then drove away, vowing to come back.

“I went inside my uncle ’ s house to charge my phone and he (uncle) drove out. After five minutes I went outside where my two friends (Ntshangase and Sibiya) were drinking liquor, I joined them,” Koyana said.

He said suddenly, two men came towards them. “They held us at gunpoint and asked where my uncle was. In less than two minutes the white Citi Golf approached the driveway. Njongo came out of the car and shouted: “Those are the same people we had a quarrel with, shoot them.”

Koyana said Njongo then led him and his friends towards the Golf. “Before we could reach their car I managed to flee but was shot, I struggled to get up and they left me there ... thinking I was dead.”

The accused then drove away with Ntshangase and Sibiya to Menzi High School where they allegedly shot them. Sibiya died from two bullet wounds to the head while Ntshangase was left paralysed. The trial continues.
