Can United build on win?

- Khanyiso Tshwaku

MARITZBURG United have been KwaZulu-Natal ’ s sole bright spot in the Premier Soccer League, even though consistency has not been their strong point.

They have been there and there about in the middle reaches of the table but stringing together three or more wins has been beyond them. What they have been able to do is procure some unexpected victories, one of them being Sunday ’ s 1-0 win away to Bloemfontein Celtic.

This was the same Celtic team that traumatised Mamelodi Sundowns with a ruthless and scintillating display of football en route to a 5-0 hammering.

They were unable to replicate that magical performance on Sunday as a resolute United unit kept them at bay, moving to eighth spot in the process.

Central to that performance was defender Kwanda Mngonyama, who feels they may have turned the corner in terms of getting consistent results that will keep them in the top eight.

“Finding consistency is very important because we have developed a knack of being able to win two matches but not being able to get the business done in the third game,” he said.

They will need a repeat of Sunday ’ s form when they face Roger de Sa ’ s side Ajax Cape Town side at Harry Gwala Stadium on Tuesday evening. Ajax are also in the hunt for a top-eight spot after their early season assault ran out of steam.

“That Ajax game is not going to be easy because we want to finish in the top eight,” Mngonyama said.

“There is the possibility of us finishing in fifth or sixth so it ’ s up to us whether we win these games.”
