KOMPHELA MAKES HISTORY

KHUNE HUNGRY AFTER SETTING RECORD

- Mark Gleeson

STEVE Komphela is the first local coach given the permanent post of head coach since Sergio dos Santos.

The appointment of Kroonstadborn Komphela yesterday comes as a major reversal in thinking for Chiefs ’ chairman Kaizer Motaung, who has employed foreign coaches continually since the Briton Geoff Hudson in the early 1990s. Dos Santos, who was born in Portugal but is considered a local, was put in charge in 1993 but lasted just a matter of months. Since then other South Africans in charge have served only as caretakers to finish the season after the departure of the coach.

Motaung ’ s foreign flops have included Philippe Troussier of France, Malawi ’ s Franky Mbale and Vladimir Vermezovic of Serbia.

But Jeff Butler, Ted Dumitru and Joe Frickleton brought a myriad of titles to the team.

Chiefs ’ first foreign appointment was Eddie Lewis in 1974, when Lewis split his job at Wits University with coaching Chiefs on a parttime basis.

ITUMELENG Khune says he ’ s “hungry for more ” caps after becoming Bafana Bafana ’ s most capped goalkeeper this week.

Khune broke Andre Arendse ’ s long-standing record for most international appearances, 67, by an SA keeper when he won his 68th cap in Bafana ’ s 2-1 win over Angola on Tuesday. “I am hungry for more success. I feel this is just the beginning of good things to come,” he said, according to a statement sent out by Safa.

But the goalkeeper, who has let in 51 goals in his Bafana games, conceded the team needed to improve after failing to win their opening Afcon qualifier against Gambia at the weekend.

“’I m not satisfied yet because of the position which Bafana find themselves in in terms of rankings – we need to be in the top 10 in the world and top five on the continent, so we still have a long way to go,” he said.

But Khune backed Bafana Bafana to emerge out of Group M, which also includes Cameroon and Mauritania. Cameroon won their game against Mauritania 1-0 and they are top of the group. – Sowetan Reporter
