Motaung was impressed by presentation

STEVE Komphela’s presentation blew Kaizer Motaung away, the Kaizer Chiefs chairman admitted on the appointment of the club’s new coach yesterday.

Motaung said the club was proud to appoint a South African – making it a trio at SA’s big three, along with Eric Tinkler at Orlando Pirates and Pitso Mosimane at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Records indicate Komphela has become the first South African since Sergio Dos Santos in 1993 to be appointed full-time Chiefs head coach from the beginning of a season.

Motaung once famously proclaimed there was no South African who could coach Chiefs or Pirates, but said yesterday the statement had been “taken out of context”.

“When I said there was no one capable of coaching Chiefs or Pirates, I was talking about coaches who were available at that time,” the chairman said.

Komphela has reportedly been Chiefs’ target since Stuart Baxter left earlier this month. But indications Komphela also had to convince Amakho- si of his suitability.

“The presentation he gave blew me out of this world, ” Motaung said.

Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung said Komphela had to make a presentation that separated him from “25 to 30” applicants.

Motaung said it was fitting that Komphela had finally has been given a chance at a big club at the side that first gave the former Amakhosi captain and defender a coaching opportunity.

He said the coach was to meet his technical staff yesterday to discuss signings and players to be released, and the club hoped to make an announcement within two weeks.
