Teko on the money
I’M NOT MISUSING MY MONEY
THERE are footballers who, for various reasons, badly mishandle their finances to the point that they are in serious financial trouble at the end of their careers.
They buy cars like they are buying candy, and probably the last thing on their minds is investing for the future.
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teko Modise admits he spends to reward himself for the hard work he puts in, but insists he is investing and has a few businesses that he can focus on fully once he retires.
Modise has been pictured with many different cars throughout his career, including an Aston Martin DB9 back in 2010. At 32, Modise will have to spend money wisely to ensure he does not join many other retired footballers who end up broke.
“When you work hard you need time to celebrate the blessings you have. I have had so many stories written about me. Some things have shocked me,” Modise said. “People exaggerate things and there is nothing I can do about it. I am not going to stoop to that level.
“What I know is that you can ’ t live the same way you were living as a footballer when you retire. You just need to surround yourself with good people and get good advice. We make bad decisions and they kill us. It ’ s not because we misuse money, but because we get bad advice. Not many people talk about this.
“When I stop playing I will focus on some businesses that I have started. They are not blooming now because I am playing. But when I retire I will be able to focus on them. I just hope it works out in future. ”
The former Orlando Pirates midfielder revealed he had a burning desire to play overseas, and when a move did not materialise, he thought his career was over.
“I had many offers, but I am not going to dwell on it. I have had a great career in South Africa and I am proud of what I have achieved.”
