Death shatters family

- Benson Ntlemo

NOEL Singo is struggling to come to terms with his mother Thinavhuyo Selina Singo ’ s death in mysterious circumstances.

The 26-year-old man from Tsianda Village outside Levubu said his mom went missing on June 3 and her body was found inside a pit toilet in the village last Friday.

The stench of Thinavhuyo ’ s decomposing body led to the gruesome discovery of her remains in a pit toilet near a local church building.

Singo, the deceased ’ s only son, said his 51-yearold mother was never sickly and he did not expect her to die so early in life and in such questionable circumstances.

“I have no siblings and my mother ’ s death has left me poorer. ”

He said although his mother was not employed full-time, she used to do odd jobs in the area to put food on the table.

“We would never go hungry as she was a well-known person in the community and worked hard to fend for her family. ”

On the day of her disappearance, the Tsianda-born Singo she was supposed to go and see someone in another part of the village at dusk but never returned.

News of her disappearance was reported to the local traditional leader and a missing person ’ s case was opened with the police.

“While we were trying to figure out what could have happened to my mother, there came the news that I never expected – that she was dead.”

Singo said the death has brought a lot of misery to the family as no one is employed and they have no means to bury her.

The leader of the local community policing forum, Matamba Mamuremi, condemned the brutal killing.

“So far we do not know what could have happened to her before she was thrown into that toilet and we do not want to jump to conclusions,” he said.

A spokesperson for the Levubu police, Warrant Officer Solly Mukhola, said the police have arrested a 27-year-old man who will appear in court on Monday. He could provide no further details as the police were still investigating.

Survived by her only son and three grandchildren, Singo will be laid to rest tomorrow at Tsianda cemetery.

The funeral service will start at her home at 6am.
