Komphela, United deadlocked over release
NEW Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has reached an impasse with former employers Maritzburg United over the terms of his release from the team to take up his new role at Naturena.
Komphela was unveiled as the new coach of the league champions on Wednesday, but leaves Maritzburg with a year still remaining on his contract.
He is yet to reach an agreement with the KwaZulu-Natal club ’ s chairman Farook Kadodia, according to the coach ’ s agent Tim Sukazi.
“We are still talking, but there is no agreement in place yet. I am hopeful it will still be sorted out this week, though,” Sukazi said.
“We have said to them that we do not expect to be paid for the one month notice period that Steve has to work out according to his contract, so that is already money saved by Maritzburg.
“They still want Steve to pay after that and that is where the disagreement is, because we believe if you resign and you serve out your notice then you are free of your obligations.”
If the matter cannot be resolved then it could end up in front of the Premier Soccer League ’ s Dispute Resolution Chamber, or even in the Labour Court, though Sukazi stressed he did not believe it would go that far and that a compromise would be found.
Kadodia was not available for comment, but it is understood that they are pushing for at least two months ’ salary compensation from Komphela.
