R100 000 for MetroFM winners
ALL the winners of next year’s edition of the Metro FM Music Awards (MMAs) will each pocket R100 000.
The event in its 15 years of running has only presented its winners with trophies.
During the official launch of the awards yesterday in Durban, station manager Sibongile Mtyali said the upcoming awards would be different.
The ceremony billed for February 27 returns to Durban ’ s International Convention Centre for the fourth time under the theme “Legends don ’ t stop, they ask what ’ s next ”.
Mtyali said the station has set aside R2.2-million for the prizes.
“The room is set, the iPads, and cameras are ready. It is all systems go for this platinum year of MMAs. South African music stars deserve what we put on the plate for the contribution they [have] made to improve the music industry,” she said.
Metro FM DJs Amon Mokoena, Pearl Modiadie, Pearl Thusi and sports anchor Robert Marawa attended the launch.
General manager Leuba Ramakgolo announced a new category aiming at celebrating and rewarding music stars from countries on the rest of the continent.
“Metro FM will run [a] full listener participation or [listener] driven campaign for the public to name the category.
“It [Metro] will also host [a] music workshop in Durban, designed to help up-and-coming artists, hosted by SA music giants to nurture, groom and help them [new artists] with ways to be sustainable in the competitive industry, ” Ramakgolo said.
A comedy element has been added as part of the build-up to the event to showcase the industry.
Ramakgolo said it was a strict requirement of the MMAs that the albums, singles and recordings eligible for entry at the 15th MMAs must have been released between November 23 2014 and November 24 2015.
MMA nominations and entries open today. Closing date is December 11.
