Erasmus debuts for Rennes at last

- Nick Said

KERMIT Erasmus finally made his debut for French Ligue 1 side Rennes, some two months after he joined the club from Orlando Pirates.

Erasmus came on for the final 10 minutes of the 2-2 draw with Lyon that keeps Rennes in fifth place, two points behind Nice in the third and final Uefa Champions League qualification place. The league title is no longer a possibility in this campaign after Paris St Germain stormed to the title with a 9-0 thrashing of Anele Ngcongca ’ s Troyes.

It was a humiliating defeat for Ngcongca, who was replaced midway through the second half along with two other members of the defensive line. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored four goals for PSG in what was a major footballing lesson for Ngcongca.

May Mahlangu could breathe a sigh of relief after his Belgian side Sint Truiden narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the season.

In the end, the team qualified for the Uefa Europa League play-offs after their 1-1 draw with Ayanda Patosi ’ s Lokeren. Both South Africans, ignored by national team coach Shakes Mashaba for the meetings with Cameroon later this month, started the game.

Andile Jali played for Oostende as they lost 4-1 to Genk to finish the regular season in fourth. They will now feature in the championship play-offs. Darren Keet played for Kortrijk in their 3-0 loss to Anderlecht that sees them finish ninth on the log.
