Mondi scores Amajita selection
BUDDING midfielder Tyrone Mondi has emerged as the first major recruit from the SAB U21 national championships that ended in Limpopo on Saturday.
The 19-year-old from Bloemfontein has received national under-20 call-up.
He was one of the stars for University Sport South Africa who won the SAB tournament by beating Free State 2-0. The tournament was held at the University of Limpopo, east of Polokwane..
“He [Mondi] has adapted well. He trained with us and he is a promising lad. We watched a lot of SAB League matches and he’s playing for CUT [Central University of Technology],” Amajita coach Thabo Senong said.
“We just wanted him to be in a tournament where it is competitive and we are happy with what we saw. He is a versatile player and he’s quick, plus he’s got the ability to defend. He appears levelheaded as well as coachable.”
Senong said Mondi’s progress was monitored by Safa coaching instructor Frans Mogashoa.
“Frans is the one who was heading the selection group there and since I was with the U23s, it was important that we had coaches there to make sure we don’t lose talent that side.”
Meanwhile, Senong said 23 players reported for camp.
“A big thank you again to the PSL teams for releasing the boys on time. It is just a bit unfortunate that our key strikers, Fagrie Lakay and Luvuyo Mkhatshana, won’t be part of the camp due to injuries. We’ve brought in Khanyiso Mayo for Fagrie and Mondi for Luvuyo.”
Amajita host Lesotho in Bloemfontein on Saturday for the second leg of their African championships qualifier. SA lead 2-0.
