Downs now favourites

BRAZILIANS SMELL SEMIFINAL

- Tshepang Mailwane

WHEN the CAF Champions League group stages began, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane encouraged his players to “have fun” and use the campaign to learn as much as possible for when they compete again next year.

But Sundowns have now become one of the favourites to win the competition after beating three former Champions League winners in Group A. Their first win though, over ES Setif, was later nullified after the Algerians were disqualified for stadium trouble.

Sundowns are three points clear at the top of Group B after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over five-time winners Zamalek at Petro Sport Stadium in Cairo on Sunday.

Midfielder Tiyani Mabunda and PSL footballer of the season Khama Billiat scored.

Sundowns now need just a point at home against Zamalek next week to book a spot in the semifinals, but you can be sure they will want to keep their 100% record in the campaign with another victory.

In Group A, things look good for southern Africa as well after Zesco United of Zambia beat ASEC Mimosas (Ivory Coast) 3-1 in Ndola. With six points, Zesco are a point behind group leaders Wydad Casablanca (Morocco).

Meanwhile, Sundowns on Sunday showed their confidence when in possession. Billiat, Mabunda, Keagan Dolly and Leonardo Castro were a constant threat, playing a quick passing game which confounded Zamalek defenders.

Mosimane has managed the squad well since the domestic season ended. He has given the players as much rest as possible after every group match in the CAF contest, and bringing in fringe players when necessary.

In Cairo, it was the turn of Percy Tau who did well against one of the continent’s giants. Tau came in to replace Anthony Laffor in the second half. Downs’ remaining fixtures July 27 v Zamalek, Lucas Moripe Stadium (7.30pm)

August 23 v Enyimba, Port Harcourt Stadium (TBC).
