Jozi beauties vie for Miss SA title

MISS South Africa 2017 regional judge Bridget Masinga believes Johannesburg girls are posing a challenge to judges because they are so ambitious.

Masinga, who has joined the list of regional judges with Maps Maponyane, said Joburg contestants had their minds set on success compared to girls from other cities. The two form part of the panel for the regional judging which takes place around SA during the next six weeks.

“I am not saying others do not want success or are not ambitious, but Joburg girls are very hungry for success. It is expected because they live in the centre of the country’s economic hub where everyone is here for two things; to get money [and] be successful.”

Masinga, the 2002 Miss South Africa second runner-up, said she was ready for the first Johannesburg judging session on Saturday at Carnival City in Brakpan.

“I know it is going to be an interesting day. It will be a long day and the competition will be stiff.”

Masinga, who also has a daily 9am-12pm slot on Jacaranda FM, said the judges were looking for certain qualities because they know Miss South Africa is not just a beauty pageant.

“We are looking for an ambassador who can compete in international competitions such as Miss Universe and Miss World.

“One thing I can tell you is that we are not [only] looking for an educated person. We always look at the height, confidence and personality. We want people who are involved in the world around them and in community activities.

“It boils down to the collective quality that is crucial for any Miss SA contestant.”
