ZUMA USES RACE CARD FOR VOTES

Whites created poverty for black people, he says

- Siviwe Feketha

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma has once again attacked white people, saying they are responsible for black people’s poverty.

Zuma said the country’s economy was still in white hands and that white interests were represented by the DA.

“Sometimes people forget where we come from. We were not poor before the oppressors came here, we had land and livestock.

“The poverty we see today was created by them,” Zuma said during his campaign trail in Tembisa on the East Rand.

He said black people must unite and vote for the ANC.

“Let us use our vote and fight for the economy. Blacks must unite. All white people vote even though they are in the minority because they know the power of voting,” Zuma said.

With only 13 days left before the municipal elections, Zuma called on Tembisa residents to rally behind the ANC and abandon smaller parties, especially the DA.

“The DA is the party of our oppressors. Where does a black person get the courage to go out and vote for oppressors?”

This is not the first time Zuma has lambasted black DA voters.

While the hostels in the township where Zuma visited have been viewed as ANC strongholds, the EFF has been making inroads in Tembisa. Zuma’s campaign trail included a visit to Ehlazeni Hostel where he called on them to back the ANC.

Notably, Zuma did not pay a visit to hotly contested Sethokga Hostel near Oakmoor train station, which recently saw clashes between ANC and EFF supporters, leaving two EFF members dead.

Hostel dwellers, however, expressed displeasure that Zuma had not listened to their problems.

“We were not poor before the oppressors came here

Thobeka Mongo said politicians knew very well about their conditions but they were not solving them.

“He did not ask us [about] our problems, but he makes promises and he mentions them because he knows them.

“I support the ANC, but if they can take us seriously I think that would be better.”

Ekurhuleni ANC mayoral candidate Mzwandile Masina said there were plans to increase units for hostels in the township.
