Khuzwayo on ANC ticket

MASKANDI singer and producer Shobeni Khuzwayo has made it onto the ANC ward councillors candidate list.

Khuzwayo, a co-founder of awardwinning female maskandi group Izingane Zoma, had dedicated his time to politics and suspended his involvement in the group.

He has handed over his duties to fellow co-founders Mqapheleni Magubane and Busani Khuzwayo.

He will be competing with other candidate councillors in ward 1 of Nqutu, KwaZulu-Natal. The ward is currently under the leadership of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

“I was shocked when I heard that the community believe that I can change their lives. I knew that I did not have to be a councillor to make a difference in the community.”

Though he has been a card-carrying ANC member at Igubasi branch in Nqutu for years, he never saw himself playing such a crucial role in the community.

The music producer believes that he was chosen as a ward candidate because of the good work he has been doing in the community.

“I have been assisting the community where I can because I wanted to make sure they have some of the basic needs. A few years ago, I spoke to the department of transport to build an access road in the area, and they did. People were happy that even ambulances could access the area easily. Taxi people were also happy because they saw their business growing.”

Khuzwayo also got the department to build a big bridge connecting Nqutu and Msinga.

The project is currently under way and he said it would assist the two areas.

“The project is on as we speak and it has employed about 25 people who were unemployed in the village.” When Sowetan spoke to Khuzwayo he was busy with a doorto-door campaign in his ward in Nqutu.

“When I go to people I remind them of the good work the ANC has done. I promise them that the party will deliver all the promises.”
