RESIDENTS of Mzimhlophe Hostel in Meadowlands, Soweto, responded in a gleeful manner to the historic professional boxing tournament at Ekuthuleni Hall on Saturday.

It was all thanks to Victory Boxing Promotions (VBP) and Mayisela CHAMPS, which jointly staged the ground-breaking event.

VBP is owned by Shanell Winlock, while Mayisela CHAMPS is a Meadowlands-based nonprofit organisation owned by the son of late boxing hero Arthur Mayisela, Steve Mayisela, Thulani Njapa and retired boxer now matchmaker Jerry Phukuje.

A local traditional music group belting out the sounds of iscathamiya wowed fans who could not contain themselves and sang along, turning the boxing event into a joyous festival.

Boxer Prince Dlomo, a hostel resident, reciprocated with a spirited performance to win the Gauteng provincial belt against Tshifhiwa Munyai in the main bout, while Ronald Malindi stopped Ronnie Chiloane in the second round of their scheduled eight-round rematch contest.
