MORE pupils have come forward to claim that they had sexual relations with a teacher who allegedly recorded a steamy sex session with a 17year-old pupil.

The KwaZulu-Natal department of education said yesterday that during MEC Mthandeni Dlungwana’s visit to the high school in Nquthu, six girls, aged between 14 and 16, came forward and claimed to have allegedly slept with the teacher.

“This is very devastating. From when I saw this video, I have been very heartbroken. To this end, we will make sure that we send psychologists to offer their services to learners who might need this kind of service,” said Dlungwana, who laid statutory rape charges against the teacher.

He said the teacher had been suspended and a task team appointed to investigate if there were any other teachers doing the same thing.

It is alleged that when pupils tried to attack the teacher inside the cottage‚ they found another pupil inside. It was not clear who took the video and when it was taken.

Dlungwana was informed by department officials that the teacher was accused of having slept with many other pupils. He is said to have lured them into his cottage where he engaged in sex with them.

South African Council of Educators (Sace) communications manager Themba Ndhlovu said they were investigating.

“This is a matter of urgency. This is one of the things that bring this profession into disrepute. Sace will take the necessary steps to deal with this matter.

“The code of conduct states that no teacher should have a sexual relation with a learner. If the teacher had a sexual relationship with a learner, then he would have breached our code,” Ndhlovu said.

“A good number of these cases have resulted in teachers being struck off the roll of educators indefinitely,” he said, adding that the council was concerned about the number of cases involving teachers who have sexual relations with pupils.

Ndhlovu said KwaZulu-Natal had 23 cases of teachers involved in sexual misconduct or rape over the past financial year.

The complaints were lodged with Sace in the province between April 1 2014 to March 31 last year.

This was followed by Gauteng which had 22 cases reported.

This also meant that of the 97 complaints lodged with the council in the province, cases of sexual misconduct or rape were the third most reported against teachers.

South African Democratic Teachers Union KwaZulu-Natal secretary Nomarashiya Caluza said what was captured in the video was totally unacceptable.

“Things like these degrade our profession… Sadtu has a code of conduct that stipulates how we as members relate to pupils… We do conduct out internal disciplinary action [if a member is found to have breached the code],” Caluza said.

The Film Publications’s Board said they would analyse the video.
