Attack on our police is barbaric
I HAVE been heartbroken by the act of violence that I saw on the video that went viral yesterday where a traffic officer was being attacked by a motorist.
It is alleged that the officer had instructed the motorist to move his car from where he had illegally parked it.
The most unfathomable thing was to see community members just standing by and laughing as if it was a comedy. Our country, since the dawn of democracy, has earned respect from the international community due to its constitution but has lost our morals from within.
It is saddening to see the defender of the community being defenceless while the very same community stands by and make things worse by cheering
This shocking video makes me to question the current legislation. Not to say I support the previous laws, but when I was young we regarded cops as heroes in our community. We used to respect them so much. People have been taught more about their constitutional rights than responsibilities – so they now do as they please.
A cop with a gun is like a kid with a toy gun, because, according to the law, he won’t use it until someone dies. We no longer have respect for our men and women in uniform.
It is time for government to come up with a new legislation that will uproot rotten apples and deal with them accordingly, when they pose even a little threat to officers.
Former Police Commissioner Bheki Cele once said police must shoot to kill, it was harsh to say, but it reduced crime. It’s unfortunate some officers did abuse this privilege.
After watching the video, I suggest the SAPS must come up with a radical but controlled method to deal with this barbaric behaviour.
There must be a policy that will bring back the respect the police deserve.
Attacking officers should have dire consequences equal to the offence. Enough with attacking police officers. Tshifhiwa Singo, Soshanguve
