ZOLILE Malangeni, 55, who worked as a senior manager at OR Tambo Ntinga Development Agency, and his wife Ntombovuyo, 49, who was employed at an economic development department at Mhlontlo municipality, were having supper with their two daughters on Thursday, August 11, when two unknown gunmen stormed into their house and shot them at point-blank range in Tsolo, Eastern Cape.

Ntombovuyo died on the scene while Malangeni, who was reportedly earmarked for a senior position in the local council, died at the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha the following day.

Malangeni, who was also chairman of the ANC’s Walter Mzingisi Dazana branch in Mhlontlo’s Ward 7, was hailed as a uniting figure of the branch and a “peace-loving comrade”. He was set to make a return as a councillor after making it to the ANC’s proportional representative list.

OR Tambo ANC regional boss Xolile Nkompela described Malangeni as a “very brilliant comrade, a people’s person, a unifying factor and an administrator of note”.

“Malangeni’s name was one of those nominated by the region to be mayor or council speaker.

“The ANC has been dealt a heavy blow and so has the Mhlontlo municipality.

“The reason why we called him again [to serve] was because of the good work he had done for the municipality during his term.”

Malangeni was also a principal at Jongizizwe School for Kings in Tsolo and an advisor to the Mpondomise Royal council.

He was also helping farmers in the area. The couple will be buried tomorrow at Mayalweni in Tsolo.
