Ex-pro players form North West Masters
FORMER Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy and ex-Mamelodi Sundowns fullback Lovers Mohlala have been elected deputy chairmen of the North West Masters and Legends Football Association.
The structure was formed by former professional football players born and bred in the North West, and the elections of office bearers was held in Rustenburg at the weekend.
The masters’ football controlling body was formed to mitigate social challenges faced by some of the retired pro footballers, as well as to assist in the development of the game in the province.
The provincial executive committee elected were Moeketsi Senqhi, of Ngaka Modiri Molema district, who was installed as the provincial chairman and Vryburg-born McCarthy and Mohlala – from Hartbeespoort – as his first and second deputies, respectively.
Former Jomo Cosmos and Orlando Pirates defender Lucas Tlhomelang and Bongani Cashibe (ex-Pirates) are additional members.
Also elected to the executive committee are public relations officer Eric September, another former Chiefs player from the ’90s; Mlungisi Alexander; Lucky Tsita (general secretary and assistant), and David Makgale (treasurer).
The association has been operating with an interim structure since last year and and it is recognised by the South African Masters and Legends Football Association.
Last weekend’s gathering was graced by education and sport development MEC Sello Lehari.
“As the North West government we always promote unity and we are extremely happy to see that former professional football players united,” Lehari said.
“Once you are united, it will be easy to achieve support from the department.
“We are going to work very close with the elected executive committee on numerous development programmes.”
