Mulenga hopes to propel Mbombela into PSL this season

- Tshepang Mailwane

NEW Mbombela United striker Clifford Mulenga is hoping he can use his experience to help the team go a step further than they did last season.

Mbombela were the surprise package in the National First Division last term, finishing third to qualify for the promotion/relegation play-offs.

The new season kicks off on Saturday and Mbombela have a tricky away game against Santos at Parow Park.

“When you taste something, you want it again. The team’s ambition is even bigger this season. Our prime target is to win promotion. I believe we have enough weapons to challenge for automatic promotion,” said Mulenga, who was with Moroka Swallows last season.

“With my experience, I feel I can add value in the team and help the younger guys. I really believe we can do well.”

It’s likely to be another tight battle for automatic promotion and Mulenga has identified a few serious contenders for a place in the top flight along with Mbombela.

“I think Jomo Cosmos, AmaZulu, Milano United and Royal Eagles will be teams to watch. We played in a pre-season tournament which included Cosmos and Tuks. From what I saw, Cosmos is looking good.

“We need to try collect as many points as possible. We play Santos first and it’s never easy playing in Cape Town. But we are ready for the challenge,” Mulenga said. Fixtures (all 3pm) Saturday University of Pretoria v Cape Town All Stars (Tuks Stadium); Santos v Mbombela United (Parow Park); Royal Eagles v Real Kings FC (Harry Gwala Stadium); Magesi FC v Thanda Royal Zulu (Old Peter Mokaba Stadium); Mthatha Bucks v Stellenbosch FC (Mthatha Stadium) Sunday Jomo Cosmos v FC Cape Town (Olen Park Stadium); AmaZulu v Black Leopards (Princess Magogo Stadium); Milano United v Witbank Spurs (Boland Rugby Stadium)
