LERENA CAN ‘GIMMETHEMONEY’

Top Shot, Sundari look good value

- RACING EDITOR

A TOUGH card awaits punters for the meeting at the Vaal Classic track today but most people are likely to look at Gimmethemoney as a possible banker for the BiPot and Place Accumulator.

The progeny of Gimmethegreenlight have been in unbelievable form recently and his three-year-old filly, Gimmethemoney, seems to be improving with every start and could pull off her second win in Race 2, a FM 64 Handicap over 1000m.

Gimmethemoney was very green on debut when heavily backed and again disappointed second time out when a short-priced favourite. Trainer Paul Peter decided to send her to race on the Greyville Polytrack for her third start and jockey Anton Marcus made all the running to win comfortably.

Gimmethemoney was not disgraced last time out when third behind well-supported Dolphin.

Jockey Gavin Lerena replaces apprentice Calvin Habib, which indicates she is ready for a big run.

The real threat to her does appear to be Pinot Var.

Trainer Paul Matchett has his yard in good form and Pinot Var did have Gimmethemoney 6.10 lengths behind her when winning in April. She does not always give of her best all the time, though.

Dupont filly Cape Infanta was not too far behind in her two sprint starts and is likely to prefer this distance and could be the right one to get off to a winning start in Race 1, a Maiden Plate over 1450m.

Both Vogue’s Wood and Nine O Clock News are distance suited and can pick up the pieces if the Alec Laird-trained runner does not make the expected improvement.

A couple of long-priced runners on the card might be worth looking at in some open looking contests throughout the day. Great Brother in Race 4, Top Shot in Race 6 and Sundari in Race 7, could all be value at their current prices.

Great Brother was a runaway 7.75 length winner in July last year and has not followed that up in his next five starts but has gone from a high merit rating of 84 to a current 55 which could make him a lot more competitive.

Race 6, a Mr 80 Handicap over 1600m looks very competitive but the team of Gary Alexander and Andrew Fortune are in good form so Top Shot has to be in with a chance.

Top Shot has recently been a modest performer but those runs were probably over too far, so the drop to 1600m will suit him.

Trainer Candice Dawson has started her training career with good successes and her runner, Sundari, in Race 7, a MR 72 Handicap over 1800m, could take advantage of his very low turf rating.

?? ?? TOP PERFORMER: Gimmethemoney has run consistently well and looks the filly to beat in Race 2 at the Vaal today.
