‘Don’t tarnish Mbeki’s name’

- Loyiso Sidimba

EKURHULENI mayor Mzwandile Masina yesterday lashed out at those implicating former president Thabo Mbeki in the assassination of struggle icon Chris Hani.

Masina said naming Mbeki was a plot to further divide the ANC.

In Clive Derby-Lewis’s last interview before his death, he brings up Mbeki’s name. He said during his incarceration, he was visited by former safety and security minister Steve Tshwete and justice minister Penuell Maduna, who demanded to know whether Mbeki was involved in Hani’s death.

The ANC Ekurhuleni chairman, Masina said it was unfair to blame Mbeki and tarnish his image without proof. “Put facts on the table,” Masina demanded.

According to Masina, the ANC already has its own challenges.

Masina also warned some of the country’s top business people who are demanding that President Jacob Zuma step down.

He said growing demands for economic transformation and land restitution were agitating white monopoly capital to seek regime change.

“The attacks on Zuma are unwarranted,” he added.

Masina said the so-called “Arab Spring” in north African countries – Tunisia, Egypt and Libya – achieved regime change but got more than they bargained for.
