Banyana have flattered to deceive over the years in the Africa Women Cup of Nations.

Four times they came so close to winning the tournament, only to falter at the final hurdle, including on debut in 1995.

In their first final appearance, SA lost 4-1 to Nigeria in the first leg playing away. It was worse in Johannesbu­rg in the return leg, where Nigeria won 7-1 to register an 11-2 aggregate.

Banyana lost their second final in the tournament they hosted in 2000 to the same Nigeria, who won 2-0 on the day.

In 2008, Banyana went down 2-1 to then hosts, Equatorial Guinea.

Four years later, Banyana caused an upset when they defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the semifinals, only to lose 4-0 against hosts Equatorial Guinea in the decider.
