Wits’ fringe players blow their chance
Hunt vows some may never wear club’s jersey again
Bidvest Wits’ fringe players who did not take their opportunity on Tuesday against Jomo Cosmos in the Nedbank Cup last 16 can expect to spend a lot more time twiddling their thumbs on the bench.
Wits coach Gavin Hunt threw in the likes of Sifiso Myeni, Siboniso Gaxa, Cuthbert Malajila, Jabulani Shongwe and Uzonyi Ejike, but none of them made an impression as the Clever Boys were beaten 54 on penalties by Ezenkosi.
Frustrated with his players, Hunt said he would not even give them a chance to redeem themselves in the CAF Confederation Cup first leg play-off match against Egyptian side Smouha SC at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday (3pm).
Wits were knocked out of the CAF Champions League by another Egyptian side, Al Ahly, before the recent international break.
“You also have to look at our own players. Some players I gave an opportunity and they did not do it. They complain, but you see why they don’t play,” said a visibly unhappy Hunt after the game at Tsakane Stadium.
“That’s the biggest disappointment for me because we need our squad. I gave a few [a chance to play] and I should have taken them off after five minutes. There’s a few of them who are going to be eliminated. They won’t play again – out! ”
Platinum Stars and SuperSport United are also involved in Confederation Cup action this weekend, both away from home. Dikwena play AS Tanda of Ivory Coast on Sunday, while Matsatsantsa take on Barrack Young Controllers from Liberia.
