Wits rely on old guard to see them to the PSL title

Gaxa urges former winners to carry the bulk of load

Bidvest Wits have never won a league title, but their squad is full of players who have previously been crowned Absa Premiership champions. There’s Elias Pelembe, Daine Klate, Bongani Khumalo, Moeneeb Josephs, Cuthbert Malajila, Mogakolodi Ngele, Dillon Sheppard and Siboniso Gaxa who all know what it’s like to win the biggest prize in South African football.

It’s these players who now have to use their experience to inspire Wits to its first league title.

The final 10 league matches will be crucial for Wits and Gaxa, who has won three league titles in the past, is counting on the old guard to ease the pressure during the tough period that lies ahead. “We have players who have been around, like Moeneeb Josephs, Daine Klate, Dillon Sheppard, myself [and] Pelembe, who have won the league. These are players who have to help the younger ones because the pressure comes in now,” said Gaxa.

“The younger players have been unbelievable, so now it’s just the last hurdle. The last hurdles are the ones which are difficult, so we need to help the youngsters.”

Having won league titles with both SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs in the past, Gaxa believes the Clever Boys have a squad good enough to beat his former clubs, including Mamelodi Sundowns, to the title. “This is a team that’s capable,” the 32-year-old said.
