Sundowns lose further ground in title chase
Pitso’s men have now gone five games without a win
Mamelodi Sundowns have lost further ground in the Absa Premiership title race. Following their goalless stalemate against Bloemfontein Celtic last night, the reigning champions have now drawn three and lost two of their last five league matches. Sundowns created countless opportunities, but fluffed them all as they failed to get a winner against a Celtic side happy to play for a point away from home.
The home side’s best chance of the first half fell to Leonardo Castro after a through ball from Khama Billiat, but the Colombian couldn’t guide his attempt past Patrick Tignyemb in Celtic goal.
Castro has been a shadow of his former self so far this season. Last season he played 35 matches and scored 15 goals, compared to his one goal in 18 appearances in this campaign.. Celtic, on the other hand, rarely created any opportunities despite coming close in the first half but Kennedy Mweene brilliantly pulled off a double save to deny the visitors. To make matters worse for the Brazilians, midfielder Tiyani Mabunda was forced off the field just before the break after he twisted his ankle. The extent of the injury is not known at this stage. He was replaced by Teko Modise.
The second half was just as frustrating for coach Pitso Mosimane’s men.
Defender Ricardo Nascimento saw his attempt come off underneath the crossbar, but the assistant referee was convinced that it didn’t cross the line just after the hour mark.
Billiat also saw his header came off the woodwork.
Celtic, who are slowly moving away from the relegation zone, did every trick to get a point, even time wasting. They succeeded in the end.
