Scrappy but Clever Boys celebrate

Wits go top after beating Arrows 3-0

- By Tshepang Mailwane at Bidvest Stadium ■

It’s that time of the season where performances do not really matter.

It’s all about results and Bidvest Wits got the job done last night in a 3-0 victory over Golden Arrows, who came into this game on the back of a good win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank cup.

It was a scrappy league game which referee Chris Harrison could have handled better.

Some early pressure on the Arrows defence paid off for the Clever Boys, when they were awarded a penalty for a hand ball in the box.

Malawian international Gabadinho Mhango stepped up and he calmly slotted home in the 20 minutes, sending Nkosingiphile Gumede the wrong way. It took Mhango’s tally of goals in the league to nine.

The second half was much better for Wits, but the same cannot be said for Arrows.

Mogakolodi Ngele sealed all three points for Wits with that sweet left foot of his from range, giving Gumede no chance in the Arrows goal in the 65th minute. The Botswana international was given too much room to pick a spot and have a shot at goal and he did not need a second invitation.

The former Platinum Stars striker was not done. His second goal was from close range, as he finished from a Mhango cross which was whipped in from the left flank in the 70th.

In Port Elizabeth, Chippa United and Polokwane City drew 0-0.
