Winless in five games, Sundowns don’t want another slip up in title race

Mamelodi Sundowns have promised to hit the target in tomorrow’s Tshwane Derby against SuperSport United at Loftus Stadium (7.30pm).

In dealing with their goalscoring problem, Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana revealed that the players met earlier yesterday and “came clean” about their misfiring.

“The strikers are human beings and they need motivation as well,” said Kekana at a press conference yesterday.

“If you are not motivated in this game, you are not going to deliver well. We addressed the issues this morning (yesterday) and everyone came clean.”

Kekana didn’t elaborate further, except to confirm that the misfiring issue was addressed.

Heading into the clash against Matsatsantsa, the midfield strongman is confident that they will start firing again.

Sundowns have gone five league games without a win, and only scored one goal in that period, which has affected their ambition to defend the league title.

Meanwhile, sitting alongside Kekana was SuperSport United captain Dean Furman, who told the Sundowns skipper that “we are ready”.

Furman smiled at his Bafana Bafana teammate, but showed a serious face later on.

“A victory will take you into a position to challenge [for the league], and losses are felt more now than earlier in the season, whether that makes sense or not. At this stage of the season, you can fall behind the chasing pack,” said Furman.

SuperSport and Sundowns will face each other twice in a space of a week starting tomorrow, and considering they are both challenging for the league, Furman said it was vital that his side win both encounters.

SuperSport head into this clash in a better form having won two, drawn two and lost one in their last five league matches.
