Crawford runner has been a bit unlucky

- RACING EDITOR

THE show goes on at Kenilworth today and possibly the best bet at this race meeting is Moonrise Sensation in Race 8, a MR 68 Handicap over 1600m.

The Brett Crawford and Corne Orffer combination has been a bit quiet of late but Moonrise Sensation and a couple of other runners could change things. This Var gelding was as high as a 86 merit rating six months ago but is now sitting on a rating of just 65.

He has proven himself very competitive off this mark, having finished runner-up and one length behind a fair horse in Straat-Kind and then got beaten just 0.30 lengths by Silver Master a couple of weeks later.

The step up to 1600m should not be a problem for Moonrise Sensation.

Let us hope we can get off to the best possible start by backing Rings And Things in Race 1, a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1400m.

This Candice Bass-Robinson-trained filly has improved with each outing and ran her best race over this course and distance when runner-up behind Favola last month.

Jockey Aldo Domeyer knows the filly well and although her stable companion Hopeful looks a danger there was 1.70 lengths between them last time they met.

The form of Captain Ram’s debut effort took a smack when True Words ran disappointingly over the weekend but he still may prove to be the one to beat in Race 2.

Obviously the Justin Snaith-trained Varside will prove a danger though and both need to be included in all exotics.

Cardinal Call has proven to be a difficult horse to win with and has developed a habit of only running on when the race is all but over.

This Jay Peg gelding is the one to beat in Race 5 but can expect a strong challenge from Prince Alfred.

This Great Britain threeyear-old looks promising and is likely to improve on his somewhat disappointing fourth place finish last time out.

Jockey Richard Fourie is back aboard Prince Alfred and can make all the difference.
