white corporations were given the privilege of transferring all the wealth they had accumulated undeservedly – almost intact to the new South Africa. Most of them have enriched themselves quite handsomely over the past 18 years, while the attitudes of many whites is conspicuously indifferent to the plight of the impoverished majority.

“For the new black corporations, lucrative opportunities have been created since 1994 to accumulate considerable wealth, and part of their wealth was also undeservedly accumulated. One gets the impression that the new black elite and the new black corporations are also conspicuously indifferent towards the plight of the impoverished majority.”

They are the forgotten ones, the people of Coligny, of Eldorado Park, Ennerdale, Kliptown – which are the latest to be engulfed by violent service delivery protests – who have not enjoyed the dividends of freedom.

The most prominent and publicised of the contemporary dialogues taking place across the country are notable for their exclusion of the forgotten people.

If these ongoing discussions fail to bring in the voices of the millions of impoverished people who need change to work for them, then they are certain to repeat history and deliver a flawed transformation.

Terms on which the reconfiguration of power has taken place were wrong
