Frustrated Shongwe happy to leave Wits

Midfielder keen to move to get game time

Jabulani Shongwe has no problem with the fact that Bidvest Wits have decided not to renew his contract.

Shongwe played just two games all season for the PSL champions and he’s now on the lookout for a club where he can re-establish himself.

“I don’t know which team I will be joining. I’m still with Wits until the end of this month,” said Shongwe, who was once linked with Orlando Pirates.

“Wits said they are not going to take the option they have in my contract.”

The 27-year-old’s two appearances came in the Nedbank Cup, so he didn’t play a part in their league success.

“Jafefe” admitted that it was heartbreaking watching from the sidelines, considering he was a regular in his first two seasons with the club.

“It wasn’t nice for me watching others play, but I had to be strong and support the guys,” Shongwe said.

The competition for places in Wits’ central midfield was even higher this year. The likes of Ben Motshwari, Thabang Monare, Xola Mlambo, Granwald Scott and Phumlani Ntshangase were vying for a place in the starting line-up.

“Yes, these are good players but every footballer wants to play. I would have understood if it was my first season, but it was my third season at Wits.

“So, as a player you ask yourself what went wrong. How can you play more than 60 games in two seasons and the next thing you are not playing a single game?” he said.

The Witbank-born lad played 35 games in his first season with Wits in 2014/2015 and followed it up with 30 appearances in the 2015/2016 campaign, but things were not the same this season.

The player’s agent Jazzman Mahlakgane is expected to meet with Wits chief executive Jose Ferreira soon to finalise the exit.
