‘Leaving Generations boosted me’
He says leaving Generations gave him a big break
For Anga Makubalo, leaving Generations was the bigger break he had hoped for.
The hunky actor from New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, was axed from the soapie in 2014 when he and 15 other actors, including Sophie Ndaba, Slindile Nodangala and Patrick Shai, embarked on a strike against producers for better pay.
Makubalo, who has since ventured into music and goes by his stage name NaakMusiq, says he has been able to focus on his other interests since his departure from the soapie.
“Being on Generations was amazing. It opened doors but they were also really clingy with their lead cast members and, as a result of that, I lost out on a lot of work.
“At the time [be- cause I was new in the industry] I didn’t mind, but now I realise how much bigger I could have been had I gotten the time to shine on other productions, but all is well, what matters is things are looking good now,” he says.
The 30-year-old Makubalo has graced a lot of productions since he left the soapie which has since been relaunched as Generations: The Legacy.
He is currently playing the role of lead actor Jonga on Mzansi Magic’s popular telenovela Igazi alongside television’s favourite female villain Vatiswa Ndara and

legendary actress Nomhle Nkonyeni.
Makubalo is also set to feature on season two of the channel’s drama series Ring Of Lies which is set to hit the screens at the end of next month. He will play the character of musician and ladies’ man Buzwe.
“I love it. It’s different. I don’t want to give away a lot, but let’s just say it was exciting to be able to sing on TV.”
He adds that his experience on the set of Ring of Lies was blissful because “it’s a production company I’ve worked with before.
“So it was comfortable seeing the crew and some of the cast members. “I was well received.”
After a successful music and television run last year Makubalo went on to win this year’s Tropika Island of Treasure game show and blessed himself with a brand new BMW X6m which retails for over R1.9-million.
“My dream car was actually the one I owned before this (BMW M3). I’m a huge car fanatic.
“I always change cars to have a feel of what they perform like,” he says.
His latest house album titled Born To Entertain features the likes of Black Motion, Donald, Mampintsha, Xoli M, Tira and FKA Mash among others.
“I am currently working with DJ Tira on something called the Redbull culture clash, you should hear more about that real soon. Working on music with DJ Bongs, Gemini Major, Euphonik and a few other artists.”
Makubalo’s brand new single titled Mamelani will be released today.
With his successes which include money, fame and more work in the pipeline, Makubalo still feels he is not where he wants to be.
“I’m very pleased with my progress. Although I can never really get comfortable because my goals are big. I still have many plans and I’m executing them one day at a time. I am not yet at my peak.
Even though he remains tight-lipped on his personal and love life, the actor was reported to be dating a woman known as Michaela Roy.
The tough-boy-persona also melts off when it comes to his grandmother whom he says he respects and loves dearly.
