One leg dancer’s big win
His dance group steals hearts to scoop R35 000
A young dancer from Sebokeng has refused to allow his one leg to stand in his way of being a professional dancer.
Musa Motha, who is a member of a hip dance group Dynamic Crew, is using the one leg to his advantage.
The 21-year-old and his group recently aced the Red Square Dance Competition, walking away with R35 000.
The group shone with their isbhujwa, a dance form that combines pantsula and hiphop. Motha, who dances with his crutches, was amputated at the age of eight because of a type of bone cancer called osteosarcoma. When it was discovered it had spread, the doctors opted to amputate him.
“When I was amputated, I was a serious soccer player. But I refused to think that I am unable to do things. For me, it was either I fill pity for myself or I live my life and dream big like others,” he said. I don’t believe in impossibilities, instead I separate the word impossible into two so that it says ‘I’m possible’.”
who is also a deejay calling himself DJ Sync Palmer, said his aim was to inspire other people not to allow any disability to dictate their future.
The Dynamic Crew is made up of Given Mgcina, Tumelo Joseph Letsheko and Motha. The three have been together since 2010 and have won several dance competitions. Motha says the group was disappointed not to win last year, but added that it was understandable.
“What worked for us this year was consistency, energy and versatility. Also what made it a bit easy for us was the fact that we knew what we were going to face in terms [of our expected] competitors. We had a plan and stuck to it.”
Motha said the cash prize that the group won will be used in advancing their careers in the arts and entertainment.
