Tinkler gives young talent a chance

Super Sport youth grab rare chance to impress

Super Sport United players from the Multi Choice Diski Challenge (MDC) have been given a rare opportunity to impress first team coach Eric Tinkler.

This opportunity comes as the senior players enjoy their break after qualifying for the knockout phase of the CAF Confederation Cup last week.

The former Cape Town City mentor started tutoring the junior side on Monday and he is expected to continue until the first team players return on July 28.

“I have given the first team players a break and that will give me an opportunity to look at the Diski boys. Super Sport is a club that believes in youth development.

“We will play a few friendlies with them and see if there is any special talent there,’’ said Tinkler.

One of the club’s promising youngsters, Khanyisile Mayo, believes that working with Tinkler gives them a chance to impress for first team positions ahead of the new season.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us who want to play in the first team. We are determined to impress him and use the platform well because it is not a daily thing to be trained by him. Everyone will go all out,’’ Mayo told Sowetan yesterday.

Teboho Mokoena is one such player who graduated from the club’s MDC side and made a huge contribution in the first team in the just-concluded season. His achievements have motivated his peers.

“It was motivating to see one of our own [Mokoena] doing well in the first team. It pushes us to work even harder.

“I think this season many of MDC players will be promoted,’’ added Mayo, the son of former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana striker Patrick Mayo.
