Player inspired by likes of Yeye

Former Ajax Cape Town midfielder Lebohang Mokoena is still hopeful of reviving his career.

“CheeseBoy”, 30, left Mamelodi Sundowns a disappointed man a year ago after a drop in game time.

The move to Cape Town on a two-year deal represented a fresh start, but he has been axed after just a year with the Urban Warriors, having failed to win a regular spot in the side.

Where to next for the former Orlando Pirates player?

“I left the club [Ajax] at the end of June and I was back home [in Johannesburg] by the second week of July. I’ve been home ever since and I’m training on my own,” Mokoena told Sowetan yesterday.

“I was told already in January that they [Ajax] won’t be keeping me.”

Mokoena hinted that it was probably management’s decision to let him go, because current head coach Stanley Menzo appeared to like him.

“I went to play for Ajax’s MDC [Multichoice Diski Challenge] team and when I came back Menzo was like, ‘Yoh, I didn’t know you are such a good player’.

“He ended up using me against

Highlands

Park [1-0 win],”

Mokoena explained.

“Even when I left he told me he would have loved to keep me, but he just couldn’t.”

Mokoena is not discouraged and draws inspiration from the likes of Reneilwe “Yeye” Letsholonyane, who is 35 and played 36 games for SuperSport United last season.

“I’m still 30 and I see guys who are 34 and 35 getting good contracts.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but maybe it’s God’s way of saying just wait a little bit and see what will happen. I’m still at home and I haven’t got a call from someone to ask if I’m available. I won’t give up.”
