Boxing SA opens more doors for women
Licencees renewals in Women’s Month
Boxing SA (BSA) has opened its doors even wider for women who wish to either renew or apply for licences in different departments, director of operations Cindy Nkomo announced yesterday.
She said BSA has 1 198 licensees in total, and out of that number, only 90 are females.
The country has 17 female promoters (Gauteng 7, Free State 1, KwaZulu-Natal 1, Limpopo 2, Mpumalanga 1, Western Cape 2, and Eastern Cape 3). “We have three registered managers and no trainers or seconds [assistants],” said Nkomo, who took over the vacant position that was occupied by Loyiso Mtya. “So to commemorate Women’s Month, we decided to extend our hand in the renewals of licences and also those wishing to apply for the first time. It is from August 1 until the 31st,” said Nkomo.
“This process is an annual thing that happens during the first quarter of the financial year.”
Nkomo added: “Those above 35, specifically who want to box, will still need to meet all the required medical examinations. It is not that we want to increase the number of women across all categories and flout the rules … those interested will have to communicate with provincial managers for information that is required.”
Nkomo is the fifth female to occupy a senior position in the historically male-dominated sport since the formation of BSA in 2001. The first was Violet Magwaca, then Stompie Xulu, Matilda Kabini and Muditambi Ravele, who is the current BSA chairwoman. All previous chairmen have been males.
