Metro FM fills Marawa’s sports show

Carelse joins Maboi as new anchors

Udo

Carelse and

Mpho

Maboi will fill the shoes of

Robert

Marawa at Metro

FM.

The pair step in after the unceremonious departure of Marawa last month. Carelse will be on air on weekdays except on Thursday when Maboi will present Women on Sport@6.

When asked about filling Marawa’s shoes, Maboi responded: “I don’t see it as such, I mean, he was fired.”

In the meantime, Carelse said that he was a big fan of the veteran presenter.

“It was sad to see how matters mutually devolved in a relationship that has delivered excellence for so many years. I can tell you now, and Robert will confirm this from one or two conversations we have had, that I wasn’t anxiously waiting in the wings to step into the space and jump into his shoes,” said Carelse.

“There is a lot of nervous energy bouncing around, perhaps more than I have ever felt in 20 years of broadcasting. Putting in the prep work deals with those nerves, so for now I am more focused than excited.”

He then pointed out that he was only offered the position after the SABC and Marawa formally parted ways.

Asked what tips Marawa shared with him, Carelse replied: “I think I know what Robert’s expectations would be of anyone stepping into a space he took all the way to the top and beyond. But no, he and I are still due a conversation.”

Like any other position comes fear of rejection from fans, fellow employees and so forth.

“Radio is a conversation and listeners either want to be part of that conversation or not. If it’s the former, then you have a base to work from, if it’s the latter then the space is not for you. I look forward to getting back on radio. This gig comes about a year earlier than I was anticipating.”
