Opinion divided over ‘hit’ on sushi king Kunene

- Fred Khumalo

have the spotlight on him, even when such attention is not going to make him any richer. The attention, we seem to be saying, is the oxygen that keeps Kunene going.

The disturbing thing is that it is possible that Kunene is telling the truth. He is after all, an ex-con. In prison Kunene would have made both friends (Gayton McKenzie) and enemies. Maybe an old foe was trying to settle an old score.

But what does not make sense is that he claims he was shot at 21 times. Was he counting? If, indeed, he was shot at 21 times, then he has nothing to worry about. His adversaries are miserable shots. Or, maybe the intention was to simply rattle him.

And hey, how about this theory: Kunene is driving up Corlett Drive, as he claims, and he does not realise that the spot he has just driven past is a private training ground for our army and at the time he drove past they were practising the famous 21-gun salute?

There is a version which says at the time the shooting happened, Kunene’s window was partially open. Some of the bullets got through this window, and then bounced off Kunene’s seat belt. Saved by a seat belt?

But then there are those who have pointed out that while in prison, Kunene was introduced to a strong inyanga who, among other things, gave him umuthi that would turn bullets into water.

That’s something to mull over. If the police were to follow that line of thought, they might find that Kunene simply staged this shooting incident to create excitement he will need when he starts a huge marketing campaign for this umuthi.

I don’t for a minute entertain the thought that the people who shot at him were trying to hijack him so they could rob him of his boot-load of sushi.

The sushi craze is gone, duh. Let’s just hope this was a crank that went horribly wrong.
